The Green Season in East Africa: Why the “Low” Season may be the Best Time for Your Safari

The Green Season in East Africa: Why the “Low” Season may be the Best Time for Your Safari

There’s a lot of hype for the peak safari season aka great migration safari season in East Africa… but the low season? It’s a truly undiscovered gem. Budget-friendly. Uncrowded. Refreshing. Peaceful. Beautiful… and just so much more authentic. Really. You don’t want to miss out.

Traveling During the Off-Peak Period

Traveling During the Off-Peak Period in East Africa

There are two off-peak seasons. First, from March to June. Second, Novemebr to December.

March to June. The period for long rains. April and May are the wettest. Visitors get to enjoy lower costs, and stunning views. You can expect to see sharp sunsets—and animals with their young ones.

November to December. The period of short rains. Afternoon and evening showers are frequent, and you’ll see sunshine during the early hours of the day. So game viewing is still there. It’s the perfect safari time for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Reasons to Book Green Season Safari East Africa

Though most tour companies usually suggest visiting during the peak season, the advantages of a green season safari will definitely convince you otherwise. In fact, one of my favorite months for an East Africa safari experience is May! Here is why:-

Escape Crowds

The crowds of the high-peak season take away from the authenticity of such a beautiful experience. Now, don’t get us wrong here. There is, of course, great charm during the peak months. But the beauty in the chance to be so close up to nature without the noise of large tourist groups is just… unmatched.

Take the Best Snap

Yes, the best time to view wildlife in East Africa is the dry season. But remember, wildlife is super unpredictable. You might go expecting to see everything, but capture nothing. Or, you might go with low expectations, and witness so much—from the rarest bird to the most dramatic predator action.

Save Money

Safari vacations are infamously expensive—but not during the shoulder season! You can find super amazing discounts around this time.

The best time for an ethical budget safari in East Africa is March-June as well as November - December. But the Christmas holidays are an exception here (who wouldn’t want to celebrate that special time in the middle of an African bush? 😉).

Plus, December to March is the perfect period to catch breathtaking shots of the calving season. Let’s not forget the beauty of bird life that is highlighted more than ever after the short and long rains. It’s truly one-of-a-kind photography green season East Africa.

Tips to Make the Most of a Green Season Safari

Reasons to Book Green Season Safari East Africa
  • You need to know what to pack for a green season safari. Waterproof clothes and shoes are a must—your cameras will need waterproof protection, too!
  • Prepare yourself to be flexible. You might need to wake up earlier than planned to get through washed out roads easily. Likewise, you might need to wait for water to recede before you can cross rivers and seasonal streams.
  • Pairing safari with cultural experiences (a not-so-weather-dependent activity) can make the journey a lot more exciting.
  • Be attentive, so you capture every detail—the migratory birds, vibrant skies, animals giving birth (a hallmark activity of the off-season), and so much more!

As the Green Season breathes life into Africa’s landscapes, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the magic of the wilderness without the crowds. From lush, vibrant plains to incredible wildlife sightings, this is a time of rejuvenation and wonder—a perfect backdrop for your unforgettable safari adventure.
