December – March: Lush Landscapes and Rainy Days
These months are warm, humid and rainy, especially along the east coast. Afternoon storms are common, cyclones are possible and some parks, including Tsingy de Bemaraha, close due to impassable roads. That said, this is Madagascar at its wildest and greenest. Waterfalls surge, rice fields glow, and birdlife explodes. Rates drop, crowds thin out and adventurous travellers are rewarded with dramatic skies and thick, emerald landscapes. The southwest coast around Toliara and the Isalo region stay more accessible.
April & November: Peaceful and Scenic Transitions
These quiet shoulder months are lush, colourful and great for photography. April arrives with fresh greenery after the rains and clear views across the highlands. November sees rice paddies and forests turning green again, with warm mornings and the first playful hints of summer rainfall. Both months offer fantastic birdwatching, gentle trekking and fewer visitors on the trails.
May – October: Madagascar at Its Best
The long dry season delivers cool, clear days and comfortable humidity. Trails are firm, roads are easier and wildlife viewing is at its peak. Lemurs are highly active, chameleons are easy to spot and visibility in the water is exceptional for diving and snorkelling. Humpback whales pass the east coast from July to September, making Île Sainte Marie the star of the season.
