Rainy Seasons (March-May & November): Lush landscapes, afternoon showers, and fewer crowds.

Language

The official languages are Kiswahili and English. English is widely spoken i8n urban areas and tourist centers.

Currency

The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency, available in both bills and coins. Foreign currency (USD, EUR, GBP) can be exchanged at banks, exchange bureaus, and international airports. USD bills should be issued after 2009 for acceptance.

Electricity

Tanzania uses 220/240 volts with UK-style three pin plugs. Travelers from North America will need to bring adapters.

Good To Know

1. Greetings Are Important
Always greet people before starting a conversation, it’s considered polite and respectful. A simple “Jambo” or “Habari” (hello/how are you) goes a long way in creating warmth and connection. It’s also custom to use your right hand for greetings.

2. Dress Modestly in Towns and Villages
While safari attire is fine in the bush, modest clothing is preferred in cities and rural communities. Avoid very short shorts or revealing tops, especially around Zanzibar’s coastal villages.

3. Respect Local Customs and Religion
Tanzania is religiously diverse, with many Muslims along the coast and Christians inland. During Ramadan or in mosques, dress conservatively and be mindful about eating or drinking in public.

4. Ask Before Taking Photos
Always ask for permission before photographing people or local communities. Most will happily say yes when asked politely.

5. Politeness and Patience Go a Long Way
Tanzanians value friendliness and calm interactions. Avoid being overly direct or impatient, a smile and respectful tone will always get you further than rushing.
