Good Season

January – February: Warm and Wildlife-Rich

Kenya’s short dry season is warm, sunny and fantastic for wildlife. Animals cluster around water sources, birdlife is strong and the coast is in peak beach weather thanks to dry monsoon winds. It’s a great time for travelers who want reliable game viewing without the heavy crowds of midyear.

Hot days, mild evenings and mostly sunny skies with very little rain.
Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo East and West, Samburu, Lake Nakuru and the Kenya Coast from Diani to Watamu.
Game drives, birdwatching, photography and beach time along the dry, sunny coast.
Moderate; a sweet spot for good weather without peak-season crowds.
OffSeason

March – May: The Long Rains

The long rains arrive and transform Kenya into a lush green wonderland. While showers can be frequent, the landscapes are stunning and visitor numbers drop dramatically. Wildlife is still around, birding is excellent and photographers will love the dramatic skies. Rates are lower, making this the best-value stretch of the year.

Warm and humid with frequent showers during the long rains, creating lush green landscapes.
Lake Nakuru, Central Highlands, Samburu, private conservancies and cultural regions less affected by muddy roads.
Birdwatching, cultural experiences and photography with dramatic skies and vivid scenery.
Low; the quietest and best value months thanks to discounted rates and fewer visitors.
Best Season

June – October: The Ultimate Safari Season

This is Kenya’s prime safari window! Dry weather and clear visibility make wildlife easy to spot, and from late July through September the Great Migration fills the Maasai Mara with millions of wildebeest and zebras. It’s the ultimate time for game drives, photography and classic safari experiences.

Warm days, cool mornings and dry, clear conditions throughout the main safari season.
Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu and conservancies ideal for dry-season wildlife viewing.
Game drives, photography safaris and witnessing the Great Migration from late July through September.
High; peak wildlife season with busy parks and higher prices, especially during the Migration.
OffSeason

November – December: The Short Rains

The short rains return, refreshing the plains with new grass and vibrant color. Showers are usually brief and rarely interrupt activities, making this a relaxed, scenic time to visit. Birdlife is at its best with migratory arrivals, and the coast heads into its sunny December to March beach season.

Warm and humid with short, scattered showers that refresh the landscape without blocking activities.
Maasai Mara, Samburu, Nairobi National Park and the Kenya Coast, which enters a dry, sunny spell from December onward.
Birdwatching with migratory species, scenic photography and relaxed off-season game drives.
Low; great value, greener scenery and fewer tourists before holiday travel picks up.
