January – April: The Green and Vibrant Season

Botswana’s green season brings dramatic skies, emerald landscapes and abundant wildlife. Antelope species give birth, predators follow, and the zebra migration across Nxai Pan and the Boteti River hits full momentum. Some remote lodges close due to rains, but those that stay open offer excellent value and peaceful, uncrowded safaris.

Warm, humid days with afternoon thunderstorms, vivid sunsets and lush vegetation.
Central Kalahari, Nxai Pan, Makgadikgadi Pans.
Birding, photography, calving-season wildlife viewing and experiencing the zebra migration.
Low; peaceful parks and discounted lodge rates.
Good Season

November – December: Lush and Tranquil

Early summer rains sweep across Botswana, turning the bush green and bringing brilliant conditions for birdwatching and photography. It’s the start of the zebra and wildebeest movements onto the pans, and a lovely shoulder season with fewer travelers and softer light.

Warm and sometimes humid with short, refreshing afternoon showers.
Nxai Pan, Central Kalahari, Makgadikgadi Pans.
Birdwatching, photography, cultural visits and witnessing the first movements of the zebra migration.
Moderate; quieter parks and lower lodge rates.
Best Season

May – October: Peak Wildlife Viewing

Botswana’s dry season is the prime safari window when animals gather at shrinking water sources, making wildlife sightings wonderfully predictable. The Okavango Delta floods between June and August, creating iconic waterways perfect for mokoro trips, while Chobe and Moremi are at their absolute best. October can be very hot, but game viewing remains exceptional.

Cool mornings, clear skies and warm to hot afternoons; October can reach extreme heat.
Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, Moremi Game Reserve.
Game drives, mokoro and boat safaris, sunset cruises, walking safaris and dry-season big-game viewing.
High; this is Botswana’s busiest and most expensive season, with limited availability.
