An East African safari is a dream for many travelers, offering the chance to explore some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes on Earth. From witnessing the Great Migration in the Serengeti to climbing the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro or relaxing on the white sandy beaches of Zanzibar, East Africa provides an unparalleled blend of adventure and relaxation.

Choosing the right time to visit is crucial to make the most of your safari experience. This guide breaks down the best times to visit East Africa based on weather patterns, wildlife movements, and travel experiences.

Understanding East Africa’s Climate

East Africa’s climate is predominantly tropical, characterized by wet and dry seasons rather than traditional winter and summer cycles. The region’s proximity to the equator ensures warm temperatures year round, but rainfall patterns significantly influence the landscape and wildlife behavior.

The two main rainy seasons in East Africa are:

  • Long rains (March to May): Heavy and consistent rainfall transforms the landscape into lush greenery, but roads can become muddy, and game viewing is more challenging.
  • Short rains (October to December): Rainfall is less intense and intermittent, creating a balance between lush scenery and manageable travel conditions.

The dry seasons, which typically fall between June to October and January to February, are the best times for an East Africa safari as the weather is pleasant and wildlife viewing is exceptional.

Dry winter (mid-May to August)

The beginning of the dry season and the beginning of the best time to visit. As water sources shrink, animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes. Game viewing becomes more reliable as the weeks go on.

This is also when the Great Migration begins its push northward. Herds move through the northern Serengeti and cross the Grumeti River between June and July before pushing into Kenya’s Masai Mara around July and August.

For gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda, the dry winter is also one of the two recommended windows. Keep in mind that Rwanda and Uganda are tropical rainforests, so some rain is possible even in the dry season.

Spring (September to early October)

Peak season. The dry winter intensifies: streams continue to dry up, temperatures rise slightly, and animals become more concentrated around the remaining water sources. This is typically when wildlife sightings are at their most reliable and most dramatic. The Mara River crossings are at their height, with wildebeest pushing through Kenya before beginning the return south.

Short rains (November to early December)

The wildebeest begin moving south again, back toward Tanzania. Animal concentrations become more spread out. But the short rains have a lot going for them if you know what you’re getting. Showers usually come in the afternoon or at night, leaving mornings clear for game drives. The landscape is green and vivid. Migratory birds arrive in huge numbers, making this the best window in East Africa for birdwatching. Lodges are quieter and rates are lower. For photographers specifically, the light during this period is hard to beat.

Summer (December to March)

Dry season returns. Tanzania and Kenya are at their hottest, and the rest of East Africa is pleasantly warm. The calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu runs January through March, with around 8,000 calves born per day at peak, making this one of the most remarkable wildlife windows of the year. Predator activity is intense. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is also at its best December through February.

Long rains (April to early May)

The wettest months. Most seasonal camps close. Roads can be challenging. Wildlife disperses as water becomes available everywhere. If the long rains are the only time you can travel, it’s not impossible, but it takes more planning. The right camps stay open year-round, and a well-built itinerary can route around the most problematic roads and crossings. If that’s your window, talk to us and we’ll work around it.

Best times for specific East African destinations

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The Serengeti is the centerpiece of the Great Migration and offers strong game viewing year-round.

Best time: June to October for general wildlife viewing and the Grumeti and Mara river crossings. January to March for calving season and intense predator activity.

Worth knowing: March to May brings the long rains. Travel is harder and wildlife disperses.

Masai Mara, Kenya

One of East Africa’s most famous reserves, and the northern stage for the Great Migration.

Best time: July to October for migration and predator activity. February to March for good game drives with fewer crowds.

Worth knowing: April and May can be challenging due to the long rains.

Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

A self-contained ecosystem with one of the densest concentrations of wildlife anywhere in Africa.

Best time: June to October for dry, clear conditions and easy wildlife spotting.

Worth knowing: March to May brings rain that can obscure views and make crater roads slippery.

Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Known for its elephant herds and iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Best time: June to October for clear skies, dry conditions, and the best chance of an unobstructed Kilimanjaro backdrop. Wildlife concentrates around water sources during this period.

Worth knowing: April and May are the most difficult months for access.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda are the two main destinations.

Best time: June to August and December to February, when trails are drier and trekking is more manageable.

Worth knowing: Both destinations are tropical rainforests, so rain is possible any time of year. The dry season reduces the difficulty, but it doesn’t eliminate it.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

A natural add-on to a Tanzania safari, with pristine beaches and turquoise water.

Best time: June to October for dry, sunny weather. December to February is also excellent.

Worth knowing: March to May heavy rains can disrupt travel.
