March – May: Green & Quiet

These months bring Rwanda’s long rains, transforming the hills into a vivid green paradise. Trails can be muddy but photography is incredible, birdlife is abundant and travelers enjoy quieter parks and discounted lodge rates. In Akagera, this season often coincides with newborn antelopes.

Frequent showers, misty mornings and lush, cool afternoons.
Nyungwe, Akagera, Lake Kivu.
Birdwatching, photography, cultural experiences.
Low; great value with peaceful trails.
Best Season

June – September: Peak Trekking & Wildlife Viewing

Rwanda’s long dry season is the absolute sweet spot for adventures. Trails in Volcanoes and Nyungwe National Parks are firmer, visibility is excellent and gorilla and chimpanzee trekking conditions are at their best. Akagera’s wildlife gathers around lakes toward the end of the season, making sightings easy and frequent.

Cool, dry mornings with sunny, comfortable days.
Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe National Park, Akagera National Park.
Gorilla and golden monkey trekking, chimp trekking, game drives, canopy walks.
High; gorilla permits sell out quickly, especially July–August.
OffSeason

October – November: Short Rains & Lush Landscapes

The short rainy season brings dramatic clouds, dense greenery and fewer visitors. Trekking is still possible, though trails may be slippery. Lake Kivu remains pleasant between showers, and Nyungwe’s canopy walkway and trails are quieter than usual.

Warm, humid afternoons with short but heavy showers.
Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe, Lake Kivu.
Birding, photography, cultural visits, relaxed lake escapes.
Low; easier permit availability and lower rates.
Good Season

December – February: Short Dry Spell & Scenic Lakes

Rwanda enjoys a second, shorter dry season that’s perfect for primate trekking and lakeside relaxation. Trails are generally manageable, forest humidity is lower and Lake Kivu is perfect for kayaking, boating and lazy afternoons along its green-fringed shores.

Warm days and mild nights with low to moderate humidity.
Volcanoes, Nyungwe, Lake Kivu, Akagera.
Gorilla and chimp trekking, kayaking, boat trips, birding.
Moderate to high; popular, but not as busy as midyear.
