Kenya has a warm, tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.

Rainy Seasons (March-May & November): Afternoon showers with lush scenery and fewer crowds.

Dry Seasons (June-October & December-February): Best for wildlife viewing. Temperatures range from 55°F-85°F (13°C-29°C)

English and Kiswahili are the official languages. English is widely spoken, especially in cities and safari destinations.

Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling (KES). USD, EUR and GBP can be exchanged at banks, bureaus and many hotels. Credit cards work in most lodges, but bring cash for rural areas.

Travelers need a passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival with two blank pages. Kenya now requires an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which must be completed online before you travel.

If arriving from a yellow fever endemic country, you must show proof of yellow fever vaccination.

1. Greetings Matter
Kenyans value polite greetings, a handshake and a smile go a long way. Always take a moment to say hello before jumping into conversation, and use “Jambo” (hello) or “Habari” (how are you?) for a warm local touch.

2. Dress Respectfully
Safari attire works perfectly in the parks, but choose modest clothing in towns and villages. Coastal regions tend to be more conservative.

3. Respect Local Customs and Elders
Elders are highly respected in Kenyan culture. When interacting with older locals, a polite tone and attentive body language show appreciation. It’s also customary to accept items (like gifts or change) with your right hand or both hands, never just the left.

4. Ask Before Taking Photos
Whether in Maasai villages, Samburu communities or rural towns, ask permission first. Some communities consider photography sensitive or prefer compensation for posed cultural images.

5. Embrace the “Pole Pole” Lifestyle
“Pole pole” (pronounced poh-le poh-le) means “slowly, slowly” in Swahili, a phrase that perfectly captures Kenya’s relaxed rhythm. Things may not always move on a strict schedule, but that’s part of the charm. Take it as an invitation to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Make sure routine vaccines are current, and consider additional protection such as hepatitis A and B, typhoid, cholera (in high risk areas), rabies and meningococcal vaccines during the dry season.

Mosquito protection is essential because malaria is present in most regions, and chikungunya can occur. Bring insect repellent, long sleeves for evenings and follow your doctor’s advice on malaria prophylaxis.

Kenya is a wonderful destination, but it’s important to stay alert like you would in any major international travel hub.
