Spotting the Big 5 in Namibia: Where to Go and What to Know

Spotting the Big 5 in Namibia: Where to Go and What to Know

If you’re planning to visit Namibia for a safari, you are probably eager to see African wildlife. This (especially) includes the Big Five: buffaloes, elephants, lions, leopards, and rhinos. But where can you see the Big 5 in Namibia? Here are our top tips for the best safari experience!

What is the Big Five?

The “Big Five” refers to five of Africa’s most iconic and sought-after animals: the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo. Originally coined by big-game hunters for the difficulty and danger of hunting them on foot, today, the term represents the ultimate wildlife sightings on a safari. Spotting all five is considered a major highlight for safari-goers, and Namibia offers some incredible opportunities to do just that.

Can You Spot the Big 5 in Namibia?

Absolutely, and, in fact, you can enjoy a super-exciting Namibia safari Big Five. However, it is important to note that you will have to travel to different regions and national parks to catch them all, which, in our opinion, adds to the fun.

For example, buffaloes cannot be spotted in the world-famous Etosha National Park. Similarly, rhinos don’t currently inhabit this area either. But this doesn’t mean wildlife encounters will be any less exciting. The good news is that the country does have all five animals; you just need to know where to find them across its incredible Big Five game reserves in Namibia.

We’re sharing our top 4 favorites to help you land in the right spot.

Where to See the Big 5 Animals in Namibia?

Waterberg National Park

Waterberg National Park, also called the Waterberg Plateau, is an incredible ecological habitat. A game drive around the mountain’s top could mean sightings of black rhino as well as cape buffalo. But even along the foot of the mountain, you can catch glimpses of cute little antelopes called Damara dik-dik, if you are patient enough.

Khaudum National Park

This remote, untamed park is home to elephants, lions, and leopards, and because it’s less traveled, your safari here feels like an exclusive expedition into the wild. Buffalo sightings are possible too, especially around the park’s waterholes. Just keep in mind, Khaudum is rugged, raw, and best suited for experienced safari-goers or those craving an off-the-grid experience.

Bwabwata National Park

Bwabwata National Park (located in Namibia’s lush Zambezi Region) offers a totally different safari vibe. Here, you have a solid chance of spotting elephants, buffaloes, and even the occasional big cat if luck’s on your side.

Etosha National Park

The largest of all, Etosha National Park, could have been a small country on its own. Within its boundaries, there are various animals roaming around, including 4 of the Big 5 (leopards, lions, rhinos, and elephants). Not to mention those that didn’t make it to the list of big five animals in Namibia, such as, hyenas, cheetahs, springbuck, giraffes, and gemsbok. There’s birdlife galore, too.

Even if Etosha doesn’t “have it all,” it comes pretty close. For travelers hoping to check the full Namibia Big 5 off their safari list, combining Etosha with other parks like Waterberg or Bwabwata gives you the best chance.
