Spending time with a family of gorillas can be a life-changing experience. Gorilla trekking is, in fact, one of the most popular tourist activities in Rwanda. But one common mistake most people make is to go gorilla trekking dressed inappropriately in some sort of sandals and shorts—which are not the right clothes for such an activity. To make the most of your experience, it’s important to have the right gear. Keep reading to learn all about what to wear gorilla trekking!

What to Wear
Long-Sleeved Shirt and Long Pants
To protect your arms and legs from thorny vegetation, sunburn, and insect bites, it’s important to wear full sleeves and pants. You want to choose moisture-wicking and breathable fabrics that keep you comfortable. Be sure to avoid cotton for your gorilla clothes, as it can retain moisture and takes longer to dry. In terms of colors, go for neutral and earthy tones. Shades of green, brown, and khaki will help you blend into the environment.
You want to go for shirts with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating; this provides added sun protection. Also, the pants shouldn’t be too restrictive. Think about options that have reinforced knees for added durability.
Sturdy Hiking Boots
Footing during gorilla trekking can be steep and muddy. So, high-quality, broken-in hiking boots are a must. You want to consider options with:
- Good ankle support
- Deep tread soles
- Waterproofing

Gaiters or Long Socks
Keep mud, insects, and debris out of your shoes by wearing gaiters. These are worn over your boots. Alternatively, tuck your pants into your long socks (which should ideally be made from moisture-wicking wool or synthetic blends, and of crew or mid-calf length).
Waterproof Jacket
Keep in mind that in Rwanda, even during the dry season, sudden downpours can occur. So a lightweight rain jacket (that’s also packable) will keep you dry without weighing you down. Consider the following features for your jacket: a hood, sealed seams, and ventilation zippers for temperature regulation. A rain poncho will work, too.
Gloves
Yep, gloves! You’ll often grab onto branches and vines for balance. And when you do, gloves will protect your hands from nettles and thorns.
Hat
You can protect yourself from the sun and light rain with a light-brimmed hat (or baseball cap).
Underwear
Both comfort and hygiene are important for multi-day treks. Again, moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabrics are best. Stay away from cotton.
Sunglasses
The forest canopy is thick, and you may not always need these. But keeping a pair of sunglasses can come in handy when it gets too sunny.

What to Pack in Your Day Bag
To carry all your gear, you’ll need a backpack. When picking one, consider waterproof material or one with a built-in rain cover. This protects your belongings from the rainforest’s unpredictable weather. Also, look for a padded back panel and adjustable shoulder straps. A hip belt will ensure optimal comfort.
Besides your gorilla clothes, your daypack should have the following:
- A reusable water bottle
- Snacks and some energy bars (you may want to check the park rules for this)
- Camera (but no flash photography)
- Binoculars
- Personal medications
- Hand sanitizer
- Insect repellant
- Sunblock
Porters are available for gorilla trekking, and highly recommended! They can carry your bag and assist during the trek. Plus, by hiring a porter, you will be supporting the local community.
