The Experience

Kilimanjaro's Greener, Lower Slopes

Materuni sits on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, close enough to Moshi for an easy morning drive and lush enough that it feels like a different country from the mountain’s icy summit. The village is home to the Chagga people, who have farmed this ground for generations, and the day here moves at the pace of the community rather than a fixed tour schedule. A guide leads you down through banana groves and coffee gardens before the forest closes in, and the path narrows toward the sound of falling water long before the waterfall itself comes into view.

The falls drop more than 70 meters into a cool, shaded pool, and swimming beneath them is one of the more memorable ways to cool off on a Kilimanjaro-area day trip. From there, the second half of the day shifts from nature to craft: a Chagga family walks you through their coffee farm and the full process behind a cup of coffee, from picking the cherries to roasting the beans over an open flame to grinding and brewing what you’ll drink with lunch. It’s a full, unhurried day that pairs naturally with a Kilimanjaro climb, a Moshi stay, or the start or end of a northern circuit safari.

Why this experience

Moments worth travelling for

Designed around attentive guiding, meaningful encounters and enough time to be present.

A waterfall worth the walk
01

A waterfall worth the walk

The hike through rainforest and farmland to reach the falls is part of the experience, not just a means to an endpoint, and the reward at the end is one of the more dramatic single-drop waterfalls in the Kilimanjaro region.

Coffee, from crop to cup
02

Coffee, from crop to cup

Few coffee experiences let you touch every stage of the process. Here you pick, roast over a fire, grind by hand, and brew, then drink what you made with the family who grew it.

A village that shares its home
03

A village that shares its home

This isn't a staged demonstration. The Chagga families who host the coffee experience and cook lunch are inviting you into daily life on the mountain, and the conversation tends to go well beyond coffee.

Kilimanjaro's greener side
04

Kilimanjaro's greener side

Most images of Kilimanjaro are the snow-capped summit. Materuni shows the mountain's lower slopes: dense, cultivated, and alive in a way the peak never is.

  • Add-On:: This pairs well as an add-on before or after a Kilimanjaro climb, or as a day trip during a Moshi or Arusha stay

Location and best time

Plan for the right season

Materuni is a year-round day trip, though water volume at the falls and trail conditions shift with the rains. The dry season, roughly June to October, offers firmer footing on the descent, while the wetter months bring a fuller, more dramatic waterfall at the cost of a muddier trail.

Travel responsibly

Tread lightly. Travel meaningfully.

This day moves through a working village and a protected patch of rainforest, both of which depend on visitors treating them with care.

  • Stay on the marked trail during the hike to protect the surrounding rainforest.
  • The coffee experience and lunch are hosted by a Chagga family in their own home, tip them directly and treat the visit as a welcome into daily life, not a staged show.

Questions, answered

Before you add it to your trip

Still deciding? Our planners can answer anything specific to your travel dates and group.

Is this suitable for children and families?

Yes, for most families. The hike involves some uneven ground and stairs near the falls, so it suits kids who can comfortably walk for an hour or two on natural terrain rather than very young children who need to be carried the whole way.

Can this be combined with a Kilimanjaro climb or a northern circuit safari?

Yes. It works well as an acclimatization day before a climb, a wind-down day after one, or as a stop on the way between Arusha and Moshi at the start or end of a safari.

Do we need to be strong swimmers?

No. Swimming beneath the falls is entirely optional, and many guests choose to simply enjoy the view and the walk instead.

What should first-timers know about the coffee ceremony?

It’s hands-on rather than a demonstration you watch from a distance. Expect to pick, roast, and grind alongside your hosts, and to walk away with a strong appreciation for how much work goes into a single cup.
