Half Day Overview

Life on Kilimanjaro's Farming Slopes

The Chagga people have farmed the fertile slopes of Kilimanjaro for centuries, and this Chagga cultural experience gives you a place at their table rather than a view from the road. A local guide takes you through family homesteads shaded by banana trees, explains how the land is farmed, and introduces you to the customs that still shape daily life on the mountain.

Part of the day goes underground, into the tunnels the Chagga once dug as shelters during times of conflict. Back above ground, you’ll taste mbege, the traditional banana beer, and see how a Chagga meal is cooked, with music and conversation along the way. It’s an easy way to understand the people behind the mountain, especially for guests who have only thought of Kilimanjaro as a climb.

Travel responsibly

Tread Lightly, Travel Meaningfully

You’re a guest in family homes and on working farms, so come curious, ask lots of questions, and let your hosts lead the way.

  • Ask before photographing people, and respect a polite no.
  • Tip your hosts directly, and buy a basket, a craft, or a bag of coffee from the families you meet. It’s a souvenir with a story.

Questions, answered

Before you add it to your trip

Still deciding? Our planners can answer anything specific to your travel dates and group.

Do we have to try the banana beer?

Not at all. Mbege is a local favorite, but the tasting is optional and your hosts will happily pour something else.

Can we pair this with a Kilimanjaro climb?

Absolutely. It’s a gentle, fun day before a climb, and a great way to celebrate afterward when your legs are tired and your appetite is huge.

How is this different from Materuni?

Materuni is built around a waterfall hike and a coffee-making day. This one is all about Chagga history, homes, and food. Many guests pick one, and some do both on a longer stay.
