Overview
Known as the legendary “Whiskey Route,” the 7-Day Machame Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This carefully designed itinerary gives climbers extra time to acclimatize, increasing summit success rates while allowing you to fully experience Kilimanjaro’s breathtaking landscapes from lush rainforest and giant heathers to alpine deserts and glacial summit views.
With an additional acclimatization day compared to the shorter route, the 7-day Machame trek is ideal for adventurers seeking a safer, more enjoyable ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Why The 7-Day Machame Route?
The extra acclimatization day makes a major difference in comfort, safety, and summit success. Many climbers find the 7-day version more enjoyable because it allows the body to adapt naturally to the altitude while still experiencing all of Machame’s iconic scenery.

Shira Camp 2 (3,850m) via Lava Tower (4,600m) to Barranco Camp (3,900m)
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the mountain. You’ll climb high to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, a proven “climb high, sleep low” strategy that helps your body adapt to altitude.
The landscapes become dramatic and surreal, with giant senecio plants and sweeping alpine scenery.

Barranco Camp (3,900 meters) to Karanga Camp (3,995m–4,035m)
Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical scramble offering incredible panoramic views.
Unlike the shorter route, today is intentionally shorter to aid acclimatization and recovery before summit push day. After descending into Karanga Valley, continue gradually to Karanga Camp.
This extra acclimatization day is what makes the 7-day Machame Route significantly more comfortable and successful.
