Mount Kilimanjaro is composed of three peaks… Kibo (19,340 ft) with Uhuru which is its highest peak; Mawenzi (16,896 ft) which is a technical climb; and Shira (12,998 ft), a mass that rises 15,748 ft above a rolling plain averaging 3,281 ft above sea level. After reaching a height of 19,357 ft during its last major eruption 360,000 years ago, Kibo has been eroded by glaciers, rivers and landslides to its present height.

Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano located 43 miles west of Mount Kilimanjaro. At a height of approximately 15,000 ft it is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro and offers unparalleled views of its famous neighbor while being a rewarding hiking destination in its own right. This mountain is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savannah and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, monkeys and leopards
MOUNT MERU IS THE SECOND HIGHEST MOUNTAIN in Tanzania at 14,980 ft and the fifth highest in Africa. It is best to allow three days for climbing Meru since it involves an 11,483 ft altitude trek. There are two huts available to climbers on the mountain and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb Meru is between June to October and January/February. The mountain is usually climbed from Olkokola on the western side of the crater and you need a park ranger as an escort due to the threat of buffalo.
